What is the reason for the earth to suddenly stop rotating (and would it also stop orbiting the sun?) Gravity is a totally seperate issue and is caused by the mass of the earth (the closer you get to the earth's core, the slower time runs. If you go up in a plane, time runs more quickly).
I don't believe that if the earth suddenly stop rotating there would be any "disaterous" effects down here (such as buildings falling). Our atmosphere protects us from the realities of outer space. The fact is we are rotating, orbiting the sun, and travelling through space all at the same time.
Can't see anything much changing with the suns, except the tides would be alterted. AFter all, the moon would still be orbiting the earth and the gravity from the moon and sun is what causes the tides.

Right i've had a chat with my physics teacher and he's explained quite a bit to me.
1) If standing on the equator, you are effectivly travelling at 1000mph. If standing on the north pole, you are effectivly spinning much much slower. Therefore consequences on the Equator would be much more disasterous.
2) Anywhere thats travelling over 100mph would have effect, its like one big earthquake. Buildings are made to withstand such huge forces. However, because people are much lighter, we would fly across the room and smash into the walls before the building itself came down. This will make some good shots http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif
3) There is a lot of friction involved. Also, gravity will still exist, and even though everything would "shift" in one direction, it will still come to the ground as would a ball thrown forwards, it curves down because gravity pulls it down.
4) The sea, and water, will effectivly do the same as carrying, for example, a bucket of water. When you stop suddenly, it slops over the edge of the bucket. It would do this, "slop" over the land. Some tidal waves may be formed, depending on the depth of the sea. So if you haven't crumbled your going to get wet.
Roads, rail and stuff would peel off (I believe). This film is going to be very interesting to make. Still none of you want to help lol. That's ok. Some bluescreening, model making and live action stunts will be pulled off.
Yes, I think that leaving the audience with a question as to whether its possible or not is good. Involving the audience is always good, as is leaving them with narrative enigmas.
Anything else to say? Where would you rather be? In a building, under the ground of in the air??
Oh, hows about the tagline, any suggestions?

Is your physics teacher absolutely sure about this? If you are travelling on a ferry and you jump up in the air, you land in the same place as you when you jumped. Even though the boat has moved forwards while you were in the air, you still land in the same place. I think our gravational field and atmosphere would play a part in averting a major disaster.
------------------
Sorry Mods, forgot about the friction thing.
Did your teacher mention the effects on the atmosphere?
I know about the boat thing. at the moment you jump in the air, you are travelling at the same speed as the boat. As you have no forward thrust and friction in the atmosphere slows you down, your momentum decreases. The boat keeps working against friction to maintain its momentum, so you land in a different place. However, because you can't jump very high, the differences in inertia aren't noticable. It's different in an enclosed vehicle because the air inside also has the same momentum as it.
Oh, I don't know!

Just a thought... Do you think it's such a good idea to make a film about buildings collapsing?
Just stay away from New York then...

Yeah if you read at the top I appologised if this struck any similarities to the NY attack. However, this film has been in the process for over 3 months now.

So the earth isn't a sphere, it's a squashed
sphere, fatter at the equator?
And if I take my scales and weigh myself at
the north pole I'll be heavier than at the
equator? (Since at the equator there is more
centralpetal (sp) force, like holding on to
the edge of a roundabout at a park.)
Or since the squashing effect you are further
away from the centre of mass at the equator
so you should weight less than at the north
pole where you are closer to the centre of
mass of the earth?
So if the earth did stop spinning, all the
people who signed up for weight watchers at
the equator would be in for a big shock. Not
the biggest effect granted, but you might
want to focus on the personal side in the
film. :-)

I agree with the last statement.
Photorealisticly showing the planet going to hell is small change compared to the dialog of the situation and the interaction of the individuals involved as a result of said event.
If the emotion and dialog are there the audience will put up with a chunck of foam rubbber on a string to give a feeling of what is the genisis of the human interaction.
Window dressing is nice but "The Cold Equasions" I believe is the title. cuts to the bone of human relations in a hostile enviornment.

Thanks for that last post, can you re-write it in lamens terms? LoL. Deep meanings in my movies aren't all that important to me yet, lol.
It's hard to script peoples emotions, but dialogue is easy. But the disaster element is more fun http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif
